Denes Summer Solutions

22nd July
We all associate the long days of summer with holidays, eating outdoors and relaxing walks in the countryside or on the beach. Our pets usually enjoy the summer just as much as we do, but it does present a number of seasonal health issues for many animals. Some of these problems can easily be avoided by using simple commonsense. However, in some cases a helping hand is needed. Always ready to help, Denes has a large range of licensed herbal medicines, herbal supplements, homeopathic remedies, flower essences and aromatherapy products to help ease some of the common summer complaints. In addition there is an online A-Z guide for treating common conditions in both cats and dogs together with detailed advisory factsheets.

PETS AND HOT CARS

It goes without saying that over the summer it is not advisable to leave your pet in a car in any circumstances. It does not take long for the interior of the car to heat up to a near sauna like temperature with the heat of the sun intensified by the window glass. Since neither cats nor dogs, are able to lose heat easily (other than by sweating through their paws and by panting) they can quickly develop heatstroke. This is an even greater risk in elderly animals, where their circulation is less efficient and the ability to lose heat is even poorer. Heatstroke is not only distressing, leading to dehydration and hyperventilation, but can also prove fatal if left untreated. Think carefully before you leave your pet!

SUMMER ITCHING

Dogs, and to a lesser extent cats, can suffer from skin problems over the summer. Fleas are a continual and persistent problem, leading to flea allergy dermatitis with its associated licking, scratching and hair loss. Denes Garlic Tablets and Liquid Garlic Spray are good natural deterrents useful in keeping fleas at bay. If symptoms do develop, think about using Denes Sulphur 30c to ease the irritation and Denes Skin Balm to help heal the skin where it is sore.

Other summer problems relate to allergies of a different kind. Common allergens include pollens and grasses, leading to itchy ears, face, paws and skin, which can become bright red, inflamed and scabby. Denes Hot Itch Lotion can be applied locally to soothe inflamed areas, but Denes also has a number of other solutions to ease itching. For a herbal approach, consider Denes Greenleaf Tablets, a well tried and tested natural way of easing skin irritation. Alternatively, some of the remedies in Denes homeopathic range may also prove just as useful. Arsenicum album 30c can help where the skin is red and where there is dandruff, Rhus tox 30c is good for general itching with sores or scabs and Cantharis 30c can ease problems, where the skin is bright burning red or weepy.

Late summer leads to problems with mites, especially harvest mites. These small red mites, just visible to the naked eye, can be found on the ear flaps and in between the toes where they cause local irritation and scabbing. Denes Mite Cream can be applied to the affected areas and Denes Rhus tox 30c or Sulphur 30c can be used to ease the irritation.

TUMMY UPSETS

Episodes of vomiting and diarrhoea are not uncommon during the summer, caused either by a change of diet or eating something unsavoury. You should take your pet to the vet if the problem is serious. More minor bouts can be easily treated by giving Denes Nux vomica 30c for vomiting problems and by using Denes Digestion Plus Tablets or Probiotic+ Powder for diarrhoea. Where there is both vomiting and diarrhoea Denes Arsenicum album 30c will often solve the problem quickly.

FIRST AID FOR COMMON INJURIES

Sprains, strains, bangs, blows and bruises are common summer injuries, especially in dogs, as they are much more active during the summer months. For general injuries, including bruising, Denes Arnica 30c can significantly ease the discomfort. However, for muscle strains we would especially recommend Denes Rhus tox 30c and for ligament and tendon sprains Denes Ruta grav 30c. For small cuts, tears and other very minor wounds, apply Denes Skin Balm to accelerate healing and give Denes Silica 30c to reduce the risk of infection. For infected bites or other wounds, Denes Hepar sulph 30c can often help avoid the need for antibiotics.

TRAVELLING PROBLEMS

For some dog owners, car sickness is a perpetual problem. Where your dog or cat is very excitable or gets particularly anxious, we would suggest trying one of the Bioforce Flower Essences from the range of 5 that we stock. Animal Emergency Essence is supplied in liquid form and is easy to administer. It has an almost immediate calming effect and can be given as often as is needed. Where travel sickness is more of a problem think about trying Denes Digestion Plus Tablets, which contain herbs such as Ginger and Peppermint that have a settling effect on the stomach.

HOME ALONE

Pets do not always enjoy holiday time, as their owners are often away, leaving them behind with house sitters or in kennels. Where pining is an issue, Separation Flower Essence is an ideal way of easing the problem. The drops are easily given in food or in drinking water on a daily basis and can ease the emotional side of the separation. Denes Tranquil Plus Tablets have also proved a popular way of dealing with the same problem. Based on calming herbs including Vervain and Valerian, this gently calming combination can help reduce excitability and anxiety problems.

Cassie"Last year, our Sheltie Cassie, who is now 12yrs old, had severe diarrhoea and the vet said his prognosis wasn't good. However, after treatment he made a full recovery, but as he had always been prone to upset stomachs we decided to put him on Denes Digestion Plus tablets and since then he has been brilliant. He also used to have dreadful breath, but now he is fine. We had stopped taking him in the car, as this would upset him and with his long coat was not pleasant. Since Christmas, we have taken him with us several times and had no problems. So thank you Denes."

Denes Homeopathic Range Wins PATS 2009 Retailers' Choice Pet Care Product of the Year Award

Thursday 21st May
From votes cast by pet, aquatics and water gardening retailers countrywide, the first ever Pet & Aquatic Trade Show Product of the Year Award winners were announced on May 6th at Harrogate International Centre, North Yorkshire. Retailers visiting the dual venue show - Sandown Park in March and Harrogate in May - voted for the products that impressed them the most. Entries were displayed on the Retailers' Choice Showcases at each of the venues and also on the website of pet trade title PBW News, who sponsored the showcases and Product of the Year Awards.

PATS 2009 Retailers’ Choice Product of the Year Award

Denes Homeopathic Remedies for cats, dogs and small animals won the PET CARE PRODUCT AWARD. On learning of the award, Peter Leaney, managing director commented "We are delighted that our range of homeopathic remedies has been selected by retailers as winner of the Pet Care Product category. The selection by retailers adds further prestige to the award and demonstrates that more retailers have recognised pet owners’ increasing interest in natural remedies."

Homeopathy is becoming increasingly popular and the introduction of these new remedies provides pet owners with a further choice of products, which offer a natural, safe and effective way to deal with many common health problems in cats, dogs and other small animals. The range includes 15, easy to administer, liquid remedies in dropper bottles, all of which are available online with the 6 core remedies available through the retail trade in attractive dual faced, cat/dog and small animal, packaging. These include Arnica, Arsenicum album, Nux vomica, Sulphur, Ruta grav and Rhus tox. The composition of the whole range has been formulated by Denes' veterinary advisor Tim Couzens, a veterinary surgeon, who is a qualified homeopath and who runs a referral centre specialising in complementary therapies.

Maggie from Cheltenham writes:
"My cat is eighteen and a half and has become "arthriticy". Or at least he was until I discovered your Rhus Tox, He is now a different cat. Before he had to grapple his way onto the sofa, now he jumps; the stairs are not such a problem anymore either. I did try other things but if he detected them he would eat round them or not eat at all. I own two pet shops and have been in the business for 17 years and this is the first time something has come out that cat owners (especially) can use and know that there won't be any fights over whether they will eat their food or not, not to mention the great results. Anyway many thanks for such a great product!"

Thursday 2nd April 2009

Following the recent review of our canned cat and dog food ranges there may be some slight changes to the detailed analyses of the products. We are currently awaiting these details and in the meantime, if you are searching for foods for a specific reason, please feel free to email us at info@denes.com.

Monday 5th January 2009

It is with regret that it has been necessary to implement price rises today on many of our products. This follows numerous substantial increases in the costs of raw materials and energy in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2008. We are absorbing as much of these increases as we can.

Sadly, there will be a further rise in prices on our 400g canned food ranges from Monday 2nd February 2009, which will increase the price of a can to £1.05. These increases are the result of a rise of 45% in the price of tin plate for 2009, which impacts on the costs to us of our cans and lids.

Looking forward we would like to give our customers our assurance that we will do everything possible to bring stability to our prices in 2009.
